Trista Sutter will always have a rose waiting for Ryan Sutter.
After rumors swirled last year that the couple—who tied the knot in 2003 after meeting on the first season of The Bachelorette—were getting ready to split following a cryptic message from Ryan, Trista confirmed the couple are better than ever. In fact, she reminded fans that they were only separated because she was filming season three of Special Forces: World's Toughest Test.
"Everyone was like, 'Is she having a nervous breakdown? Did they get a divorce? Are they on a trial separation?' It was crazy," Trista exclusively told E! News' Will Marfuggi. "But it really made me feel like, ‘Aww, you guys still care.'"
The 52-year-old—who shares son Maxwell, 17, and daughter Blakesley, 15, with Ryan—joked, "We don't have millions of followers—we have a great following, but we don't have millions of followers. And for people to really be up in arms about what is happening—Ryan's cryptic posts and all the things—it was a little humbling and very sweet." (For more from Trista, tune into E! News tonight, Jan. 14, at 11 p.m.)
"If you read it back now it makes total sense," Trista said of Ryan's Instagram posts in May, in which he lamented not being able to talk to her. "I was gone, and now you can understand that I was at Special Forces filming the show."
And when it comes to the show, Trista confessed it was "the hardest thing I've ever done in my life," especially because, to put it plainly, "You go through s--t."
But she was grateful that she did it, especially because it helped put her life in perspective—and gave her kids something new when it comes to their parents, as they're not super impressed that their mom and dad met on a reality show.
"They are so over it by now," Trista admitted. "They've known for a long time."
However, things have changed for the family after moving from Vail, Colo., to Denver where people recognize them more.
"Our kids will just giggle if someone asks to take our picture or whatever,' she said. "It is what it is. We met on television! I think they're proud of it in a weird way, but it's not like they shout it from the rooftops."
