Green Bay Packers Take Anthony Belton With 54th Overall Pick

The Green Bay Packers shocked the world last night. For the first time since 2002, the team selected a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft, taking Texas WR Matthew Golden. In the past, GM Brian Gutekunst has thrived in the later rounds. Last year, he got LB Edgerrien Cooper in the second round, and he made the All-Rookie team. This year, he hopes to have found one of the offensive linemen of the future. They have selected NC State tackle Anthony Belton in the second round.

The Green Bay Packers had issues last year on their offensive line. While their starting unit was solid, they had very little depth. All-Pro guard Elgton Jenkins is also getting up there in age, and they need to build for the future. They made a big splash in free agency, landing former San Francisco 49ers guard Aaron Banks. Belton is another depth piece or a possible replacement for left tackle Rasheed Walker, who was good but not great last year.

The Packers struggled in the playoffs because of their offensive line, and it is clear the front office had a plan to fix it this offseason. After getting Jordan Love a huge weapon in Golden, they have to protect the quarterback. Belton, along with last year’s first-round pick Jordan Morgan, can hopefully solidify the line.

Final Thoughts

Picking an offensive lineman isn’t exciting. It’s hard to get pumped about blocking. However, any NFL fan knows that a poor offensive line ruins a season. The Green Bay Packers are determined not to let that happen. After being focused on defense for the past few drafts, they have started off the 2025 NFL Draft with two straight offensive pieces. Will they be able to knock off the Lions for the division crown?
