Josh Brolin's rumored DC role in Lanterns could finally redeem two of DC's biggest box office disasters. New reports state that Brolin has been offered the role of Hal Jordan in the DCU's upcoming Lanterns series. The series, scheduled to premiere on Max, is an intergalactic mystery featuring Hal and recruit Jon Stewart. The pair travel to Earth to investigate a mysterious murder with a dark secret. A Green Lantern television series has been in development for a long time, but it's finally gaining some traction, especially with Peter Safran and James Gunn taking over DC Studios.
Brolin isn't the only veteran actor in consideration for the role, as the Insneider reported that Ewan McGregor and Matthew McConaughey are also in the mix. Brolin is no stranger to superhero roles, as he played Cable in Deadpool 2 and Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The actor starred in a DC film too, but this was a far less prestigious role. If he is cast as Hal Jordan, it could redeem his DC role while also improving viewers' perception of Green Lantern.
Josh Brolin As Hal Jordan Gives Him Another DC Role Besides Jonah Hex
Jonah Hex is one of DC's biggest flops.
Brolin's first role in the DC universe occurred in 2010's Jonah Hex movie. Brolin played the titular antihero, a legendary bounty hunter who killed criminals throughout the American West during the 19th century. While it seemed like a perfect role for the Dune actor, the film was anything but. Despite a solid cast featuring Megan Fox, John Malkovich, and Michael Fassbender, Jonah Hex is considered one of the biggest superhero flops ever and a massive flop for DC. The film only grossed $11 million against a $47 million budget, as audiences and critics unanimously panned it.
Jonah Hex currently holds a dreadful 12% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 20% from the audience. It's confusing how the film got the green light as Jonah Hex isn't a popular DC character, so the film might not have done great regardless of the horrible word-of-mouth. It's an unflattering blemish on the filmography of everyone involved, including Brolin, who's carved out an otherwise excellent resume. As such, the actor deserves another shot at playing a leading role in the DC universe, and Hal Jordan in Lanterns could redeem a movie that audiences have largely forgotten about.
DC Can Finally Give Audiences A Great Green Lantern Project After The Last Film
Green Lantern deserves a better project than what he got.
Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern movie is one of DC's most infamous films. It's constantly mocked by people, including Reynolds, who shot a version of himself in Deadpool 2 to prevent it from being made. It was not a box office hit, grossing $220 million against a $200 million budget. Part of its failure could be due to its terrible reviews, as it received a 25% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 45% from audiences. It suffered from many problems, like a bland script, generic characters, and questionable CGI, such as Green Lantern's costume.
While Lanterns is still in development, it already has plenty of promise. The series' writing room consists of television and DC Comics veterans, including Tom King, Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective), and Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen). Safran has also said that the series is "very much in the vein of True Detective" (via Variety). The Green Lantern mythos hasn't had another live-action film since the 2011 film, and Lanterns is a chance to improve audiences' perception of the hero. Adding Brolin to the cast would only increase the level of talent attached to the project.
Is Josh Brolin The Right Casting For Hal Jordan?
Brolin could be the choice depending on the character's direction.
Brolin is typically known for his tough, rugged roles, such as Llewelyn Moss in No Country For Old Men and Gurney Halleck in Dune. Hal Jordan normally isn't depicted that way, as he's typically depicted as a somewhat cocky hero, but who is still charming and knows how to get the job done. He's more similar to Maverick from Top Gun and is usually younger. However, Lanterns could depict Hal Jordan as an older, experienced Lantern who becomes a mentor for Jon Stewart.
If that's how Lanterns will depict Hal, then Brolin could be a perfect fit for that role. Based on the other actors being considered for the part, it looks like that's the direction DC is taking with this character. Whatever the case, though, it's exciting to see Lanterns finally gain more traction in the DCU, and many promising updates are proving it could be great.
